Backyard Karma

My backyard is my sanctuary, a place far away from the front door.  When I step out of the front door life slaps me full in the face. Ahhh, but the backyard is my retreat where I can regain Karma. To sit in and feel the cool shade of bamboo; to see it gently swaying and hear the soft rustling does wonders for my soul.ImageImage

Happy Plants and Garden Creatures

I am not a serious gardener.  I do not test my soil; have a shed full of fertilizers or a myriad of gardening tools.  And, I cannot wax philosophically about the pros and cons of plant characteristics. I buy plants that speak to me (metaphorically, I am not that crazy – yet) and plant them where they are pleasing to the eye. If they are happy — great!  If not, I move them.  If they survive –good!  If not, I buy a different plant.  If they are a vegetable and I’m able to harvest some food – better still!

I enjoy being outside digging in the soil or relaxing while communing with my garden friends (again, metaphorically… I’m not really having a conversation with the garter snake –yet).

5:30 am

Sipping coffee minding my own business when

“…Soon again I heard a tapping somewhat louder than before.
`Surely,’ said I, `surely that is something at my window lattice;
Let me see then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore –
Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore; –
‘Tis the wind and nothing more!”      – Edgar Allen Poe

Building The Great Pergola

We wanted a pre-fabricated pergola for our patio and found this one at Lowes.ImageProblem: how to keep it stable and not blow over in heavy winds without permanently attaching it to the concrete. ImageImage

Bought 4×4’s and metal base that holds 4×4’s.  Then bought 4 cement squares.  We bolted the 4×4’s into the metal base and screwed the metal base into the cement squares with special screws.  The legs of the pergola are hollow and fit perfectly over the 4×4’s.  Final step was leveling by using shims under the cement squares and then caulked the cement squares to the patio.  Voilà – Great place to relax.

What the Hell Is That Noise

Was awakened one night about 4 months ago around 2 am to the weirdest sound.  Somewhere between a monkey and an owl.  Kept hearing this sound way early in the morning.  Figured it was an owl or possibly a Chupacabra.  Went to All About Birds site and listened to different owl calls and discovered it was a barred owl.

Never caught a glimpse of the owl for the past 4 months until last week:

Just hung out on the fence searching for small scurrying things until the magpies came and chased him off.Image

Spring Flowers

“May flowers always line your path and sunshine light your day.
May songbirds serenade you every step along the way.
May a rainbow run beside you in a sky that’s always blue.
And may happiness fill your heart each day your whole life through.”
